Captain America Cake

Ingredients:

12 eggs (weight these and then measure out the same in the following ingredients)

  • Margarine
  • Self raising flour
  • Caster sugar

2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
A little water (or milk) as needed
Red and blue food colouring

Method:

The Cakes:

Preheat oven to 180 degrees Celcius.
Cream together margarine and sugar using an electric whisk/mixer and continue to do so until the mixture turns white- and when I say white I mean very, very, very pale! (I put my whisk on the highest speed and it took about 4 minutes)
Break eggs into a mug, add vanilla and beat.
Add mixture to margarine and sugar little by little still using mixer/whisk.
Sieve the flour into the bowl bit by bit but this time fold the mixture using a spatula or a metal spoon. (Try not to flatten out the lightness we added by creaming the sugar and margarine.)
Next, separate the mix equally into 3 bowls, adding the red food colouring to one and the blue to another until you reach a colour you’re satisfied with.
Pour the mixture into three (equal!) cake tins and bake for about 45 minutes (these cakes are seriously thick). I would recommend adding some foil around the 30 minute mark to stop the outside burning whilst the inside is still cake mix).
Remove and leave in tin for 5-10 minutes before leaving to completely cool on a rack.
(Picture 2) Once completely cold, we need to cut the red cake and the white cake into 3 equal pieces. To do this, use a cake leveller that you can buy in any baking shop (Lakeland etc.). If you don’t have one, take a sharp knife and make marks around the cake to act as guideline then, with extreme care and attention, cut the cake. You can put them in the freezer for about 10 minutes before hand to make the cakes firmer before cutting but this isn’t necessary.
Using thin layers of buttercream, you want to layer up 2 cakes. One going red, white, red and the other white, red, white. Don’t stick the two together! Now comes the tricky bit. You need to get a bowl that’s got about half the radius of your cakes and place it over one of them, then cut around it. You want the circle on the inside so simply remove the outside. (This will form the red and white striped bit of the American flag that is next to the blue stars section.) You can now stick this smaller cake onto the centre of the other cake.
Using the same bowl, do the same to the blue cake BUT this time we want the outside so carefully wiggle it free from the centre and then wiggle it around the red and white smaller cake to create the effect seen in picture 2. Now put a thin layer of buttercream around the entire thing!

The Icing:

(Picture 1 and 3) You will need to purchase some white, blue and red fondant icing to make your Captain American Shield to go on top. Overall, I probably used about 500g of it, although it’s always better to have too much than too little. Make sure any equipment and surfaces are completely dry and clean and have a thin layer of icing sugar on them to prevent sticking. The key to having a good end product is to try and handle the icing as little as possible as to stop incorporating any heat.

First, roll out a thin layer of white icing and cover the entire cake, cutting off any excess and saving it for use later.
Using your blue icing, roll out a thin strip (as seen in picture one) and place around the side of the cake. Add white stars around it using a little water if needed.
Next, roll out your red icing and cut out little strips about 2cm wide and as long as the height of your cake. Place directly below the blue strip and cut off any excess.
To create the shield, you will need one big red circle (that is slightly smaller than your cake), one slightly smaller white circle, then one smaller red circle again and finally one smaller blue circle. Keep an eye on a picture of Captain America’s shield as you do this. Finally, you will need to cut out a star for the centre, the easiest way to do so is using cookie cutters. Place all in order onto the cake.

And you’re done! It’ll taste like freedom!

Notes:

There will be quite a lot of mixture left over but hey, everyone likes cake mix! The cake recipe I used here is my go-to one, it creates an extremely light cake that is absolutely delicious. I’m sorry about the lack of photos, I completely forgot I was going to post it on this blog. It sounds a lot more complex than it is so if you need any help, don’t hesitate to ask. Hope this was helpful!
